We were both traveling most of June, but that didn’t slow Kismet down! We hosted our first pack walks in Brooklyn, New York and Boise, Idaho (yes, we have customers in all 48 contiguous States already). Our friends at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon re-aired our visit, and now once again, Petey receives more fan mail than we do. The Poodle T-Shirt is summer’s breakout star when it comes to Kismet merch, and our Member Mingle at DOG PPL in Santa Monica, California was a blast. We’ll both be at DOG PPL’s next Member Mingle on July 31, so we hope to meet more of our Kismet community there!
When we were in New York, we observed a lot of dogs wearing little booties on the streets because the asphalt was so hot. With heat waves sweeping so many parts of the country, we asked Kismet’s Chief Vet, Dr. Kwane Stewart, how we can best take care of dogs in the hot hot heat of summer. Here’s what he shared:
“Hi C&J! It’s a great question. Taking care of your dog in the summer heat requires extra attention and precautions. First and foremost, always provide plenty of fresh cool water and make sure there's a shady spot for them to rest. Dogs keep themselves cool by panting and need water to do so effectively.
Avoid taking walks during peak heat hours; early mornings or late evenings are best. Dogs actually perspire through their paws – and hot pavement can burn their paws – so check the ground with your hand before heading out. If you can’t keep your hand there comfortably for more than three seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Never ever leave your dog in a parked car – even for a few minutes – as temperatures can rise dangerously fast. Keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, and seek immediate veterinary care if you notice any of these symptoms.”
Thank you Dr. Kwane – and thank all of you for the Kismet love. Tell your dog we said hi!
