"When it comes to keeping your pet safe on the Fourth of July, I always distill my advice down to one thing: Know your dog."
Many pet parents have questions about how to approach that holiday, which is notorious for upsetting dogs and other animals. Below, we share Dr. Kwane's advice for how to keep your dog safe and healthy.
It really is common sense. Know the needs of your dog, and don't press the limits.
1. If your dog doesn't know how to swim or isn't a good swimmer, I wouldn't go to the pool party or the beach on the Fourth of July.
2. If your dog isn't great around other dogs or a lot of people, don't bring them to a party or large gathering. This holiday is not the time to experiment or push their limits.
3. As for fireworks, if your dog is deathly afraid of them, I recommend staying home and comforting them. Provide treats, food puzzles, or other distractions – maybe put on a movie.
But, most importantly, stay close to them. That's the best thing you can do.
